Pharmacy practice

The vision for the KCOP Department of Pharmacy Practice is to drive the advancement of health and pharmacist-provided patient care through innovative pharmacy education, practice models and research.

The Department of Pharmacy practice furthers the mission of the School of Pharmacy by striving for excellence in teaching, research, scholarly activity, service and patient care.

The faculty provides professional educational opportunities for undergraduate, graduate students and practitioners to enable them to practice pharmaceutical care, adapt to changing professional roles, utilize new technologies, assume leadership roles in a dynamic health-care environment and contribute new knowledge to the profession.

The faculty focused teaching on developing therapeutic knowledge, drug information skills, drug dispensing skills, skills related to medication therapy monitoring, identification of drug related problems and patient education to provide pharmaceutical care and manage disease states in a variety of practice settings. Pharmacy Practice is the study of Pathophysiology and Pharmacotherapy of diseases, management and treatment with emphasis on drug of choice, dosing schedules, side effects, precautions to be taken, drug-drug interactions and patient counseling.

The Department of Pharmacy Practice within the KCOP provides professional educational opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students and practitioners to enable them to practice pharmaceutical care, adapt to changing professional roles, use new technologies, assume leadership roles in a dynamic health-care environment and contribute new knowledge to the profession.

In addition to their teaching and research, Pharmacy Practice faculty members serve as mentors to student both through the Pharm.D and residency programs.

Drug Information Center

Department of Pharmacy Practice was started at KCP Hospital. The department is located in KCP Hospitals with adequate infrastructure as per PCI norms for the Pharm D course.

Drug information centre and Patient counseling is located near the outpatient pharmacy. Department of pharmacy practice inculcates Pharm.D students in Ward round participation, Medication history interview, Treatment chart review, Prescription audit, Reporting of adverse drug reactions, Answering drug information queries, Bedside counseling and outpatient counseling for improving the health care of patients.

It is located nearby to the outpatient pharmacy.

Computer Facilities

The computer laboratory of the department is well equipped with the latest computers with network connections. It has six computers with CD ROM drives and inkjet printers.

Pharmacy Practice Services

Medication Therapy Management: Customized educational interventions to prevent underutilization, overutilization, inappropriate use, and abuse of certain drugs.

Patient Counselling: Our services go well beyond evaluating patients drug profiles. Motivational interviews investigate why patients take medications improperly, break communication barriers with patients and improve their health outcomes by enhancing compliance to physicians recommendations.

Medication reconciliation: Compares patient's medication orders to medication history and helps avoid errors of omission, duplication, incorrect doses or timing and adverse drug-drug or drug-disease interactions.

Pharmacovigilance (Adverse drug reaction (ADR) monitoring and reporting): Ensures patient safety and involves causality assessment of Adverse Events, ADR reporting and monitoring. We assist clinicians in prevention and management of ADRs.

Health Screening Programme: Enhances access to screening services to the poor. Our services include monitoring of blood pressure, blood cholesterol, body mass index and blood glucose.

Community outreach Programme: Provides an opportunity to participate in a number of community health programmes round the year, including immunization, patient safety and health education, to raise awareness about drug use and abuse.

Continuing Pharmacy Education Programme: We periodically organize workshops, seminars, symposium and conferences at the national and international level. Clinical skill development and hands-on training are offered to working pharmacists.

Patient Counseling.

  • The Patient Counselling Event (PCE) aims to demonstrate the importance of communication and counselling skills for pharmacists, increase the awareness of pharmacists as public educators, and encourage and promote the development of the pharmacy profession through an expanded scope of practice.
  • Discharge summary counseling for inpatients during discharge.
  • Provide Patient counseling to the in-patients and out-patients on etiology, signs and symptoms, drug therapy, drug dosage regimen, side effects, drug- food interactions and drug - drug interactions.
  • Prescription based counseling in outpatient Pharmacy.
